Stupid question about cell phones?

So tmobile is my carrier and who I have my plan. I have been shopping for a new phone and the tmobile phones now days I am just not thrilled with. Can I purchase a AT&T phone and just throw my sim card in it and it will work? Or a sprint phone? Or do they need to be unlocked?
